Established in 1981 on a site that once housed the colonial French Administrative Mansion, Ben Tre Museum has undergone significant transformations. Initially built as an administrative building by the French in 1981, it was later used by the South Vietnamese government during the War.

After the reunification of Vietnam, the building was repurposed into a museum by the Ben Tre Provincial Committee. It was officially designated as a historical site in 2015.
